Thinking Horizontally
July 19, 2021

Monday, July 19, 2021

Hello,

Now, what the heck does that mean you ask?

No, I am not suggesting playing the piano lying down or lying down thinking about how to play the piano. Although these are interesting ideas.

I can answer that question for ya right now. Thinking horizontally in music means to think of playing jazz piano as a line across rather than a vertical block.

Heh, I make that mistake all the time, thinking strictly in a chordal way. But you can add harmony in other ways, as in two or more lines moving in and out of each other, with each other.

It’s a super cool concept once you open your ears and brain to the possibilities

In this lesson, we use the class tune “Body and Soul” to explore this idea of adding moving parts rather than solid chords underneath a melody.

Curious? I sure hope so! Have a listen.

What do you think? Now it’s time to try this out for yourself at the piano. Pick one of your faves. Or two of your faves.

And if you are so inclined, send me a comment under the video and let me know how it went for you.

Warmly,
