    <title>Mar 27, The Origins of Jazz</title>
    <link>http://www.EasyPianoStyles.com</link>
<description>I just taught a class at UMass/Boston's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. The subject was &quot; The Origins of Jazz&quot;. After doing a lot of research on this topic, there are a few facts I thought you'd find interesting!

1. Did you know that New Orleans is the &quot;birthplace of Jazz&quot;?
2. Jazz is a combination of Western European and African influences
3 Improvisation and swing are the defining qualities of jazz.
4. Improvisation comes from both the African and European traditions.
5. The swing &quot;feel&quot; totally differs much music up until then. In classical music, the eighth notes were strictly and literally interpreted. In jazz, eighth notes are played in a uneven rhythm.
6. The conversational, call and response aspect of jazz is more connected to the African traditions.

I'll continue with more on these ideas in a later addition to the blog
If you really want some great ideas for playing jazz and other styles, check out &quot;Playing With Style&quot; Book and CD on www.EasyPianoStyles.com
